As a Vidder, I have to create my own 'mind palace': a place to remember and catalogue each and every scene down the minutest character expressions. I have know what scenes and expressions/actions will suit best the music, emotion, and story I wish to portray. Storytelling abilities, colouring techniques, transition knowledge, and various other aspects of editing are all tools that I use in order to be effective.
Personally, I've always enjoyed doing "trailer-style" videos the most, as they test my abilities to distill a story into but a few minutes, and make calculated clip choices from my myriad of options.
